Like my event and wedding photography, my style for portraits also leans on the
alternative side (much like my subjects, themselves :). I prefer to capture people in more natural elements, rather
than posing them in front of a backdrop with strategically placed lighting.
While staging and posing is what portraits have been traditionally defined by, I tend to
think outside the box...literally. I prefer natural light and for my subjects to
be relaxed. In my opinion, there is nothing relaxing about posing for a studio
portrait. I strongly
dislike being photographed, ironically, and my smile was undeniably fake in the studio
portraits that had been taken of me in the past. Photos should capture you...the
real you, and
a moment in your life. They should have meaning and feeling...they should be in
a setting in which you feel comfortable, with a background in which you can
relate to. Need a family portrait? Why not let your family home be your photo
background? While I photograph you, you should be relaxed and carrying on
conversations that interest you, I'll know just when to 'shoot' you and
photograph you at your best. (As far as pet portraits are concerned, your pets feel the same
way...they told me! :)
Many of the photos below are actually candid shots. Even though the subjects are
looking at the camera, or seem to be staged, more times than not, I surprised
them. I take a lot of candid shots and I "shoot from the hip" or do
"drive by shootings" as my friends call it. I literally hold my camera
at my side and photograph my poor unaware subjects!
